Price rnage $55,000 to $2,250,000 Shawnee, Kansas, was cited last year in the top 25 "best and most affordable" U.S. suburbs by BusinessWeek online. The third largest city in Johnson County, it ranks among the top ten cities in the eight county metro area for new home building through April 2007. The city's 42 square miles extend from just west of I-35 in northern Johnson County to beyond Highway K-7 and into some of the prettiest surroundings. Builders, developers and home buyers are drawn by the mix of beautiful home sites, quick highway access, and the combination of country and city housing choices. The Shawnee Downtown Partnership, formed in 2002 is directing the revitalization efforts for the city's original downtown. Shawnee has the new Pioneer Park on Shawnee Mission Parkway, a new skate park in Swarner Park and the new Splash Cove at the Jim Allen Aquatic Center. Renovations are underway in Shawnee Town, an outdoor museum depicting life in a rural Kansas town from the 1840's through the 1920's. Shawnee attractions include the 24,000 square-foot Civic enter, 24 city parks, the Johnson County Museum of History, Wonderscope Children's Museum, the Ice Sports Arena, the Mid-America Sports Complex, Shawnee Mission Beach Volleyball, the 1,250 acre Shawnee Mission Park and Tomahawk Hills, 250 acres that holds a public golf course and a sports dome.
